Yoga Nidra

The Artwork: Hidden in the black and gold design (from lead to gold) are three A’s. They stand for Awake, Aware, Adept

It is my belief that we are all searching for “real magic.” We want to be alchemists, healers, visionaries. We want to feel that we are making a difference. . . in our lives and in the world. Why haven’t we met a Don Juan to take us under his wing, tap us between our shoulder blades, and shift our awareness?

Many of us have tried chemicals, various relaxation methods, vision quests, and technological advances of one sort or another, whether it is a magic mushroom or “a specialized CD, designed to synchronize our brain waves, to make us more than we have been before.” And yes, all of these things work, at least to some extent.

But if they work, why aren’t we all avatars? why aren’t we practicing our “magic” to bring balance to a world that, it would seem, is out of balance?”

If I could, I would simply take a pill and become an Adept. Unfortunately, or probably fortunately, it doesn’t seem to work that way.

Because of the responsibility such “Beingness” would involve: the need to understand ego, emotions, thoughts, our monkey- mind, I think we have to do a lot of soul searching, self-discovery, and practice.

The book, “Yoga Nidra” by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, Relax into Greatness by Rod Stryker, and The Meditative Heart of Yoga by Richard Miller, Ph.D. form the basis of my practice, and the foundation for this CD. Together, they have helped me understand and clarify techniques I have been teaching for over twenty years. I had just not (consciously) included all of them in the same practice. This ancient practice makes sense to me.

“The origin of Yoga Nidra can be traced back to ancient Eastern teachings of Yoga and ‘Tantra’ (Sanskrit: tan-extending everywhere), which are a vast array of techniques designed to extend our understanding in order to overcome our mind’s penchant to divide unitive True Nature into separate objective parts. Tantra and Yoga are not concerned with philosophical intellectualism or second-hand information. These teachings are concerned with firsthand knowing of who we actually are, where we stand free of psychological, cultural, and philosophical conditioning in the truth of what actually ‘is.'” (Excerpt from Yoga Nidra-the Meditative Heart of Yoga by Richard Miller.)

Yoga Nidra is more than a method of relaxing as an approach to health and de-stressing. It is a practice of discovery that helps us go beyond our limiting beliefs and conditioning. With Yoga Nidra we have the potential to unravel the sacred mystery of life and reveal the secret (and magic) of our essence. This CD leads you through two practices of an ancient and life-changing approach to deep relaxation. . .the sleep of yogis, or Yoga Nidra.

It is said that Yoga Nidra acts on a subconscious level we are not aware of, and one hour of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to over four hours of sleep.

Winter Solstice

My good friend, professional guitarist Michael Silvestri, passed away February 9. While the world will not be the same without his beautiful, classical guitar, I expect the angels will start playing the guitar. Michael and I teamed up to create Winter Solstice. This guided imagery gently guides you through deep relaxation, extended breathing techniques, exploration of self, and intuitive messages. Mixed with the backdrop of Michael Silvestri’s classical guitar, it can be a tool for self-healing.

The Beach

The new, revised edition of the original “Discovering Intuition” guided imagery.

Track 1: Jennifer Mason, a marvelous, Canadian vocalist, granted me permission to use Sea Gypsies (J. Mason and P.Gilman: Mothers of the World) as the lead-in (and out) music on this track. It is the perfect song to help you settle in and prepare for this magical, inner journey. This relaxing guided imagery is set to the background of real-time ocean surf. Because this imagery can be used to strengthen your intuition, obtain answers to questions, reduce stress, or simply relax, you will return to this imagery again and again as each journey takes you deeper into yourself.

Track 2: Being able to relax is essential to connecting with greater aspects of yourself. With practice you will find that after doing this exercise a few times you will be able to think relax and you will be there. Against a background of live ocean surf, you are gently guided to bring your mind and body to a place of stillness as you follow your breath in a series of breathing techniques.

Tally’s Lullaby

Professional composer/pianist Karen Marie Garrett, along with composer/cellist Eugene Friesen have given me permission to use their wonderful piece, Tally’s Lullaby on this CD.

Being a Virginian, working closely with the Mental Health System of Virginia, I wanted to create something that would address pain, trauma, and healing.

This healing meditation is being given away freely to support the healing of the faculty and students at Virginia Tech, the mental health workers and support teams, and to anyone who needs healing energy.

Karen originally composed Tally’s Lullaby when a family wrote that they were comforted by her song, Simple Things from an earlier CD after their Labrador retriever (Tally) died of cancer. “Overwhelmed by their letter, and with tears in my eyes, I wrote Tally’s Lullaby.”

The original version of Tally’s Lullaby is available on Karen’s latest CD, Its About the Rose
